Frequently Asked Questions (and Answers!)

FAQs

Q. What kind of church is a "Community Church?"
A. Most "community" churches are evangelical nondenominational Christian churches. Most of the largest and fastest growing churches around the country are evangelical nondenominational churches much like ours. We tend to be conservative in our doctrine but contemporary and progressive in our approach to ministry. We believe that the Bible is God's Word and we try to teach it so that people can understand what it says and can apply it to their daily lives.

Being nondenominational means that we are not formally under the rules or authority of any national or international board or person that dictates to us what we can and cannot do. Instead, we are self-governing, kind of the "American way." But we believe the early churches in Bible times were this way, independent and self-governing, but connected through fellowships and regular communication.

Q. What are your worship services like?
A. We start with music. The style of our music is up-to-date praise and worship music led by a band made up of guitars, keyboards, drums and singers. The sound is very energetic and uplifting mixed with some quieter thoughtful songs.

Following the music, our pastor teaches the message from the Bible. He usually teaches in series (click here for the current series) and the topics apply very well to every day life, such as raising kids, getting along with difficult people, etc. His style is conversational and his approach keeps our interest very well. (Click here for a sampling of one of his recent messages.) Often, we will use drama, video clips and familiar songs to illustrate points he is teaching about.

People who have a very different kind of church background and even those with no church background have no trouble feeling comfortable or understanding what is happening in our services. To find out what it is really like, you'll have to come and experience it for yourself!

Q. Should I dress a certain way for church?
A. How you dress in church doesn't really matter. In Bible times, there was no such thing as "church attire." While some people are in the habit of dressing up for church, and they are welcome to, most just wear every day clothes to our church. Some wear jeans and flip flops (shorts in the summer). Our pastor doesn't even dress up (he's usually casual). You don't have to go out shopping for church clothes before you come here!

Q. Is this a cult?
A. NO! We are an orthodox evangelical church in full agreement with the Apostles Creed. In fact, evangelical nondenominational churches like ours are the fastest growing and largest churches around the country.

Cults are characterized by an unquestioning devotion to a single human leader and a separation from family, friends and others from their world. We are devoted only to Jesus Christ and believe in involving ourselves in the lives of our family, friends and others in the world.

Q. I've heard that churches are just after our money. If I come, will I be expected to pay anything or put money in the offering?
A. We want you to come to our church so that we can give you something, not to get something from you! While giving is part of our worship and we take up a low-key offering (the plate is passed during one of the songs, usually nothing is said about it) to take care of our expenses as a church, we would never expect newcomers to participate in it.

Q. What if my kids act up in church?
A. Great news! We have a children's ministry just for you! Our nursery provides child-care for children birth through 3 years old. All of the workers are well-trained caring people who love children. Solid Ground is for  2 year olds through fifth grade (early childhood is 2s-3s and 4s-5s) and is a high energy program to teach your kids great music and wonderful Bible lessons. Don't worry about your kids acting up and distracting you or others in church, we have a place just for them!

Q. If I visit on a Sunday, will I be publicly pointed out?
A. You can be as anonymous as you would like. Our people are very friendly and many will no doubt introduce themselves to you (this church is a great place to make friends), but we will not embarrass you by pointing you out in the service. You can just blend in with the rest of the crowd and observe the service.
